Zero Suicide Academy
The Zero Suicide Academy® is EDC’s signature two-day training for health and behavioral health organizations seeking to dramatically reduce suicides among those in their care.
Zero Suicide Academy Experience
At the Academy, implementation teams are introduced to the seven elements of Zero Suicide:
- Lead system-wide culture change committed to reducing suicides
- Train a competent, confident, and caring workforce
- Identify patients with suicide risk via comprehensive screenings and assessment
- Engage all individuals at-risk of suicide using a suicide care management plan
- Treat all suicidal thoughts and behaviors using evidence-based treatments
- Transition individuals through care with warm hand-offs and supportive contacts
- Improve policies and procedures through continuous quality improvement efforts
Led by our experienced ZSI staff and faculty, the Zero Suicide Academy provides health and behavioral health care teams with an invaluable opportunity to learn about the Zero Suicide framework, receive implementation guidance, and prepare for commonly faced challenges. Teams will also have the opportunity to network with similar organizations and establish relationships for ongoing assistance.
Academies cultivate the knowledge and motivation needed to launch and sustain the transformative work of Zero Suicide. Teams learn about the Zero Suicide framework, the seven elements, and begin implementation planning with consultation from our Zero Suicide experts.
- How do I attend a Zero Suicide Academy?
A Zero Suicide Academy is hosted by a sponsor organization and is designed for a maximum of 16 implementation teams. While a health care organization may have 8-12 people on its Zero Suicide Implementation Team, Academies can accommodate a maximum of 4 people per system.
Implementation teams from health and behavioral health organizations complete an application process to attend the Zero Suicide Academy. Academies often draw teams from across a state or region. Some academies focus on particular kinds of organizations—e.g., community mental health centers, hospital systems—while other academies are open to a wide range of organizations in a particular geographical area.
- Is sponsoring a Zero Suicide Academy right for me?
If you’re a state, federal grantee, federal agency, or regional prevention coalition interested in supporting health and behavioral health organizations in your area to begin their Zero Suicide work, then a Zero Suicide Academy is the perfect fit! The cost of a Zero Suicide Academy also includes consultation about how to support organizations’ implementation efforts, particularly in that critical first year. Your academy contract will include approximately six months of planning and consultation, hosted application process, assistance in advertising, all ZSI staff and faculty travel, event evaluation, and participant materials.
If your health care agency is ready to get started but you don't have a sponsor, a workshop or consultation might be a better fit. You may also want to review our upcoming Zero Suicide Academies listed below to see if there is an Academy already scheduled in your area.
